How to Fix Joomla Scheduled Tasks Not Running

Confirm the task is enabled and due

Open System → Manage → Scheduled Tasks and find the affected task. Confirm it is enabled, review its execution rule, and check the next execution information. A task that is disabled, configured for manual execution, or not yet due will not run merely because the scheduler is triggered.

Test the task manually first

Use Joomla's manual task test when it is safe. If the task fails manually, the problem is in the task, its plugin, its configuration, or its runtime dependencies—not the automatic trigger. Record the exact result before changing cron or scheduler settings.

Check the scheduler trigger

Determine whether the site uses server cron/CLI, Web Cron, or Lazy Scheduler. Joomla documents Lazy Scheduler as visitor-triggered and Web Cron as a hash-protected external URL. If using server cron, verify the cron entry actually invokes Joomla's scheduler in the correct PHP environment.

Check the global timeout

Scheduled Tasks options include a Task Timeout setting; Joomla documentation lists 300 seconds as the default. A long-running task can be terminated or fail before completion if its work exceeds the configured or hosting execution limits. Do not increase limits blindly without understanding why the task is slow.

Review execution history and logs

On Joomla 5.3 and later, open Scheduled Tasks → Execution History. Review the task's last run date, duration, and last exit code. Joomla documents Executed: 0 as a successful execution; other values indicate an error or failure. Also inspect Joomla, PHP, web-server, cron, and extension logs.

Check the task plugin and dependencies

Scheduled task types are supplied by plugins in the task group. Confirm the relevant plugin is enabled and that any required files, credentials, API services, paths, permissions, or extension configuration are available to the execution environment.

Verify an automatic run after the fix

After the task succeeds manually, wait for or trigger the normal scheduling mechanism and confirm a new automatic execution. Verify both Joomla's run information and the task's real-world result. This proves the task and its scheduler trigger are both working.
