How to Fix Joomla Web Cron Returning an Error

Record the exact Web Cron response

Capture the HTTP status, response text, time of the request, and the scheduler service that made it. Do not post the full Web Cron URL in a public ticket because Joomla's Web Cron uses a key or hash as part of its trigger authorization.

Confirm Web Cron is enabled

In Joomla Administrator, open System → Manage → Scheduled Tasks → Options. Joomla's Scheduled Tasks help states that Web Cron is disabled by default. Confirm it is enabled and that the options were saved successfully.

Use Joomla's generated Webcron link

After Web Cron is enabled, a required key is configured, and the settings are saved, Joomla displays a Webcron link URL to copy. Use that generated link exactly rather than constructing a URL from an example or an older site's configuration.

Replace a stale or exposed key

If the key was changed, the old URL will no longer be the correct trigger. Copy the newly generated link into the external scheduler. If the URL was exposed publicly, change the key deliberately, save, and update the trusted scheduler rather than continuing to use the disclosed URL.

Check HTTP and security layers

A valid Joomla URL can still be blocked by a firewall, CDN rule, bot protection, Basic Authentication, maintenance layer, IP restriction, redirect policy, or hosting security tool. Compare a controlled request with the external scheduler's result and inspect web-server and security logs for the same timestamp.

Separate trigger errors from task errors

A successful request to the Web Cron endpoint only gives Joomla an opportunity to process due work. If the endpoint responds normally but a task fails, inspect that task's Execution History, exit result, logs, plugin configuration, and dependencies instead of repeatedly changing the Web Cron URL.

Verify with a safe due task

Once the endpoint error is corrected, use a safe task whose execution can be observed. Have the trusted service request the generated URL, then confirm a new Last Run or Execution History record and the expected task outcome. Redact the key-bearing URL from any troubleshooting notes you share.
