How to Set the Execution Schedule for a Joomla Task
Open the task you want to schedule
Go to System → Manage → Scheduled Tasks and open the task by clicking its title. If you are creating a new task, choose the correct task type first. Joomla does not let an existing task record change to a different task type later.
Find the execution rule
In the task editor, locate the execution rule or scheduling fields. The available rule controls when Joomla considers the task due. Task-specific fields can differ, so configure the task's own parameters separately from the timing rule.
Choose a rule that matches the workload
Select an interval or execution rule appropriate for the task. Frequent schedules are useful only when the work genuinely needs to run that often. Consider the task's duration, server resources, external API limits, and whether overlapping or repeated work could cause problems.
Use manual execution for on-demand jobs
If a task should run only when an administrator deliberately starts it, use the manual execution rule where the task type supports that workflow. Joomla's Scheduled Tasks documentation specifically notes examples where a task only makes sense with Manual Execution selected.
Save and inspect the next execution
After saving, return to the Scheduled Tasks list and review the next execution information Joomla calculates. Confirm the timing is consistent with the rule you intended and with the site's operational expectations.
Remember that a schedule still needs a trigger
A task being due does not by itself guarantee execution. Joomla Scheduled Tasks can be triggered through mechanisms such as an external cron/CLI invocation, web cron, or the lazy scheduler depending on site configuration. Verify that the site's chosen scheduler trigger is enabled and actually running.
Test and monitor the schedule
Run a safe manual test to validate the task itself, then verify an automatic run occurs through the configured trigger. Where available, use Scheduled Tasks Execution History to review run times, duration, exit status, and next execution. This distinguishes a valid task configuration from a broken scheduler trigger.
