What Are Joomla Scheduled Tasks?

Scheduled Tasks automate routine Joomla work

Joomla Scheduled Tasks provide a built-in way to run routine site maintenance and extension jobs. Joomla's documentation describes them as an alternative to traditional server cron jobs. The available task types are supplied by plugins in the task group, so installed extensions can add specialized task types.

A scheduled task is an instance of a task type

The task type defines what work can be performed; the saved Scheduled Task record supplies its configuration and execution rule. When creating a task, you choose from the task types currently available on the site. Joomla does not let you change the task type of an existing saved task.

Tasks can use different execution rules

A task can be configured for manual execution or a recurring schedule supported by the Scheduled Tasks interface. The task editor also exposes task-specific parameters supplied by the task plugin. Choose a schedule appropriate to the job and to how frequently the site's scheduler is actually triggered.

Joomla must have a way to trigger due tasks

Joomla Scheduled Tasks can be triggered through its scheduler mechanisms rather than requiring every job to have a separate operating-system cron entry. Joomla's Scheduled Tasks options include the Lazy Scheduler, which can be triggered by site visitors, and Web Cron support. Server or CLI scheduling can also be used where appropriate.

The Scheduled Tasks list shows operational state

Open System → Manage → Scheduled Tasks to view saved tasks. Joomla shows information including status, title, task type, last run date, priority, and a Test Task control. This makes the scheduler useful not only for configuration but also for checking whether jobs are actually running.

Extensions can provide their own task types

If documentation tells you to create a scheduled task but the expected type is missing from the New screen, confirm that the responsible extension and its task plugin are installed and enabled. Creating a generic task cannot substitute for a task type that the extension never registered.

Monitor tasks after configuration

After enabling a scheduled task, verify its execution rather than assuming the schedule guarantees success. Check its last-run information, use the supported test/manual execution controls when appropriate, and review Joomla or extension logs when a task fails or stops running.
