How Joomla Robots Settings Work

Know what the Robots setting controls

Joomla's Robots metadata setting controls the robots meta instruction placed in the HTML head for a rendered page. Joomla exposes combinations for indexing the page and following links, including index, follow; noindex, follow; index, nofollow; and noindex, nofollow.

Start with the global setting

Open System → Global Configuration and review the Metadata section. The global Robots value establishes the site-level instruction used where content or menu configuration does not override it. Do not set a site-wide noindex value on a production site unless intentionally preventing search indexing.

Use page-level overrides when appropriate

Articles and many menu items provide their own Robots field. Use Global means the page follows the applicable global behavior; selecting an explicit value creates a page-specific instruction. This lets a public site remain indexable while selected utility or duplicate pages are marked noindex.

Understand index versus follow

Index tells a supporting crawler that the page may be included in search results; noindex requests that it not be indexed. Follow and nofollow concern links found on the page. These are crawler directives, not Joomla access controls, and they do not make content private.

Distinguish robots metadata from robots.txt

A robots meta tag is delivered in the page HTML after a crawler requests the URL. robots.txt is a separate root-level crawling-control file. Blocking a URL in robots.txt can prevent a crawler from seeing a noindex meta tag, so do not use robots.txt as a substitute for a noindex instruction when removal from search results is the goal.

Verify the rendered page

After changing Robots, load the exact frontend URL and inspect the HTML head for a meta robots element. Joomla's current metadata documentation notes that Use Global may not output a page-level robots tag in the same way an explicit article value does, so verify the effective result rather than relying only on the edit form.

Remember that search engines make the final decision

Robots directives apply to crawlers that support them and can take time to be recrawled. A noindex directive does not immediately erase an already indexed URL. For Google specifically, the page must remain crawlable so Google can discover the noindex directive and process it.
