How to Create Redirects with Joomla Redirects
Confirm the Redirect system is available
In Joomla Administrator, open System → Redirects. If Joomla reports that the Redirect plugin is disabled, enable the System - Redirect plugin. Joomla's Redirect component is designed to send requests for URLs that no longer resolve to working pages to a replacement URL.
Verify URL rewriting requirements
Current Joomla Redirect help states that Use URL Rewriting must be enabled for component redirects to function. On Apache, URL rewriting also requires the server-side rewrite configuration, commonly Joomla's htaccess.txt renamed to .htaccess when the server permits overrides. Confirm SEF/rewrite behavior before blaming an individual redirect.
Create a new redirect
Open System → Redirects and choose New. Enter the complete old URL in the Expired/Source URL field and the complete replacement URL in the New/Destination URL field. Joomla documentation specifies that the source should be a URL that no longer resolves to a valid working page.
Choose the destination deliberately
Redirect to the closest useful replacement rather than sending every retired URL to the home page. Verify the destination itself returns normally and does not immediately redirect back to the source. For permanent content moves, Joomla's normal Redirect component behavior uses a permanent redirect unless advanced status-code options are deliberately configured.
Enable and save the redirect
Ensure the redirect is enabled, save it, and then test from a private browser session or command-line HTTP client. Request the exact old URL and verify the response leads to the intended new URL. Test both the redirect response and the final page.
Avoid redirect chains
If an old URL points to an intermediate URL that itself redirects, update the source to point directly to the final destination when practical. Chains add requests and make troubleshooting harder. Also verify that another server, CDN, SEO extension, or .htaccess rule is not performing a competing redirect first.
Keep redirects during URL migrations
When aliases, menu routes, or site structure change, preserve redirects from externally used old URLs to their new equivalents. Maintain them while old URLs continue to receive links or traffic, and periodically review disabled or obsolete entries rather than deleting working redirects immediately after a migration.
