How to Diagnose Duplicate Content in Joomla
Confirm that the URLs really show the same content
Start by collecting the URLs you believe are duplicates and compare their rendered page content, title, canonical signal, HTTP status, and access state. Joomla can expose similar content through menu routes, component routes, aliases, pagination, or query parameters, but two similar-looking pages are not automatically duplicates.
Identify how each Joomla route is being created
Trace each URL back to its menu item, content item, category view, extension router, or direct component route. Joomla frontend routing is menu-aware, so the same content can acquire different route context when multiple menu items point to it. Record which URL Joomla generates from normal site navigation and which URLs are alternate entry points.
Check current Joomla routing and SEF behavior
Review the site's current SEF and System - SEF configuration before adding custom redirects. Joomla 6 routing includes stricter canonical route handling than older Joomla releases. Test direct requests to alternate URLs and note whether Joomla already redirects them to a preferred route or accepts both.
Inspect canonical and indexing signals
View the rendered HTML and identify the canonical URL declared for each duplicate candidate. Also check robots metadata, HTTP redirects, internal links, and sitemap entries. Search engines combine these signals when choosing a canonical, so contradictory signals such as one canonical target but a different sitemap URL make diagnosis harder.
Check internal links and menu structure
Search the site for links to each URL variant. Menus, modules, article links, breadcrumbs, template overrides, and third-party extensions can keep an alternate route discoverable. Prefer linking consistently to the URL you want visitors and crawlers to use rather than relying only on a canonical tag to compensate for inconsistent navigation.
Use redirects when an alternate URL should disappear
If an obsolete URL has a clear permanent replacement, redirect it directly to the preferred URL using Joomla Redirects or the appropriate server layer. Do not redirect genuinely distinct content simply because its text overlaps. Avoid chains and loops, and verify that the final destination returns the intended page.
Verify the result with crawler tools
After correcting routing, internal links, redirects, canonical signals, or sitemap entries, inspect representative URLs with the search engine's URL inspection tools. Recrawling and canonical selection take time. A sitemap or canonical hint does not guarantee indexing, so continue checking the actual selected canonical and index state.
