How to Enable Search Engine Friendly URLs in Joomla

Know what Joomla SEF URLs change

Search Engine Friendly URLs replace query-heavy Joomla links with routed, human-readable paths based largely on menu structure and aliases. Joomla's routing can generate SEF URLs without web-server URL rewriting, so enabling SEF and removing index.php are related but separate steps.

Open the SEO settings

In Administrator, go to System → Global Configuration → Site and find the SEO settings. Set Search Engine Friendly URLs to Yes and save. On current Joomla installations this option is normally enabled by default, but verifying it here is useful after migrations or configuration changes.

Test several kinds of pages

Open articles, category blogs, contacts, and other important menu routes from the frontend. Confirm Joomla generates readable URLs and that navigation still reaches the correct content. Test logged-out pages as well as administrator-visible content so caching or access rules do not hide a routing problem.

Leave URL Rewriting separate at first

SEF URLs can work while index.php remains in the path. If your immediate goal is to verify Joomla routing, test SEF first before enabling server rewriting. This makes it easier to tell whether a later 404 or 500 error comes from Joomla routing or the web server's rewrite configuration.

Review aliases and menu structure

Joomla uses aliases and routes to form URL segments. Use concise, stable aliases for public menu items, categories, and content. Changing established aliases or menu hierarchy can change public URLs, so plan redirects when an existing indexed site is being reorganized.

Consider the System - SEF plugin

Joomla's System - SEF plugin participates in SEF handling and includes additional behavior in current Joomla generations, including options related to canonical handling and stricter index.php behavior. Review its settings before enabling aggressive redirects on an established site.

Crawl the site after the change

Check navigation, canonical URLs, sitemaps, internal links, redirects, and server logs for unexpected 404s. For an established site, compare important old URLs with new routes and add deliberate redirects where necessary. SEF configuration improves URL readability but does not replace broader technical SEO work.
