How to Enable URL Rewriting in Joomla
Understand what URL Rewriting does
Joomla's Search Engine Friendly URLs and URL Rewriting are separate settings. SEF routing creates readable routes; URL Rewriting lets the web server remove index.php from those public URLs and internally route requests back to Joomla. The web server therefore must support and honor the required rewrite rules.
Enable SEF URLs first
In System → Global Configuration → Site, confirm Search Engine Friendly URLs is enabled and that the site works. Test routes before adding rewriting. This establishes that Joomla routing itself is healthy and gives you a known-good state if the server rewrite step produces errors.
Prepare the web-server rewrite configuration
On Apache, Joomla ships htaccess.txt with rewrite and security rules; the official procedure uses an active .htaccess in the Joomla root and requires Apache to permit the needed overrides/mod_rewrite behavior. Do not blindly overwrite an existing .htaccess that may contain hosting, security, redirect, or application rules; merge changes carefully and keep a backup.
Turn on Use URL Rewriting
Return to Global Configuration → Site → SEO Settings and enable Use URL Rewriting. Save, then open frontend pages in a private browser session. Public URLs should no longer need index.php while requests still resolve to the correct Joomla routes.
Handle subdirectory installations carefully
If Joomla is installed below the domain root, the web-server rules may require an appropriate RewriteBase or hosting-specific adjustment. Follow Joomla and hosting documentation for the actual server. IIS and Nginx use different rewrite configuration mechanisms; an Apache .htaccess file is not a universal solution.
Troubleshoot 404 and 500 errors at the server layer
If removing index.php causes 404s, confirm rewrite support, overrides, the active rules file, document root, and subdirectory configuration. A 500 error often indicates an invalid or unsupported server directive. Disable Use URL Rewriting while repairing the server configuration so the site remains reachable.
Verify redirects and canonical behavior
After rewriting works, test menu links, direct article URLs, forms, API or extension routes, language routes, and existing redirects. Check that HTTP-to-HTTPS and www/non-www redirects do not loop. Crawl important URLs and review server logs before considering the change complete.
