How to Fix Broken URLs with Joomla Redirects

Verify that the old URL is genuinely broken

Request the exact old URL before creating a redirect. Joomla's Redirect component expects the source URL not to resolve to a valid working page. Record its status and final destination. If it already loads valid content, fix routing or duplicate URL behavior instead of creating a Redirect-component entry for a working source.

Find the correct replacement page

Identify the page that best matches the missing content. Prefer a relevant article, category, contact, or other replacement over the home page. Open the new URL directly and confirm it returns the intended content before wiring traffic to it.

Enable the Redirect plugin and URL rewriting

Open System → Plugins and confirm System - Redirect is enabled. Joomla's current Redirect help also requires Use URL Rewriting in Global Configuration. On Apache, make sure the server's rewrite configuration is active, normally through a valid .htaccess based on Joomla's supplied htaccess.txt.

Add the source and destination

Go to System → Redirects → New. Enter the full broken URL as the Expired/Source URL and the full working URL as the New/Destination URL. Enable the record and save. If the broken URL was captured automatically, edit that entry rather than creating a conflicting duplicate.

Test the redirect end to end

Request the original broken URL in a private browser or HTTP client. Verify that it redirects to the correct replacement and that the final page returns successfully. Check variants that users may have bookmarked, but do not create unnecessary redirects for URLs that Joomla's routing already normalizes.

Investigate when the redirect is ignored

If the old URL still returns 404, confirm the request reaches Joomla and is not intercepted by the web server, CDN, security service, or another application. Recheck URL rewriting and the Redirect plugin. If it loops or reaches the wrong page, inspect competing redirects and source/destination spelling.

Use 404 data to prevent repeat problems

Review Redirects for frequently requested missing URLs and fix internal links that still point to them. Redirects preserve external traffic, but your own menus, articles, modules, and templates should link directly to the current URL instead of relying on a redirect for every visit.
