How to Fix Duplicate Joomla URLs for the Same Article

Confirm that the URLs really serve the same article

Collect every public URL you believe is duplicated and compare the rendered article, language, access state, query parameters, canonical markup, and HTTP status. Similar-looking pages are not always duplicates. Identify which URL should be the preferred public route before changing menus or adding redirects.

Look for multiple menu routing contexts

Joomla URLs are menu-aware. The router selects a menu item and uses that menu route as the starting segment for the SEF URL. A Single Article menu item, category blog, category list, hidden menu item, or another published content menu route can therefore expose the same article through different paths.

Choose one intentional primary route

Decide which menu and content hierarchy best represents the article. Keep the menu item or category route that matches the site's navigation and information architecture. Do not unpublish menu items blindly: menu items can control modules, breadcrumbs, page options, language associations, and other behavior in addition to URL construction.

Remove unnecessary competing paths carefully

If an extra menu item exists only by accident, remove or unpublish it after checking its other responsibilities. If the alternate URL comes from an outdated alias or old menu hierarchy, correct the generating internal links. Avoid creating additional hidden menu items as a quick fix because they can introduce another routing context rather than eliminating one.

Redirect obsolete URLs to the preferred URL

For alternate URLs that are already public, indexed, bookmarked, or externally linked, create a permanent redirect to the preferred route when appropriate. Test each redirect directly and avoid loops or multi-hop chains. A redirect should preserve an intentional old address, not conceal a routing problem that continues generating new duplicate links.

Review canonical output but do not rely on it alone

A canonical link can help search engines understand a preferred URL, but it does not prevent Joomla, extensions, templates, or external sites from linking to alternate paths. Fix the menu and internal-link sources that generate duplicates, then use canonicalization and redirects as complementary controls rather than substitutes for clean routing.

Crawl and retest the site after the fix

Use a crawler or targeted link review to find internal references to every duplicate path. Test menus, category pages, breadcrumbs, search, modules, related articles, sitemaps, and multilingual navigation. The preferred URL should be generated consistently, obsolete paths should behave intentionally, and no new duplicate route should appear from another menu context.
