How to Set Index, Follow in Joomla

Decide whether an explicit directive is necessary

For ordinary public content, index, follow is usually the intended search behavior. Before overriding a page, review System → Global Configuration → Metadata → Robots. If the global setting already provides the desired behavior, using the inherited setting may be easier to maintain than adding explicit overrides everywhere.

Set the site-wide value when appropriate

To make index, follow the global Joomla instruction, open System → Global Configuration, locate the Metadata settings, choose index, follow for Robots, and save. Treat a global change carefully because it can affect many frontend pages that inherit the global value.

Set an individual article

Edit the article and open its Publishing or metadata area. In Robots, select index, follow when you need an explicit article-level instruction rather than Use Global. Save the article and clear relevant page/cache layers if the previous metadata remains visible.

Set an individual menu item

Edit the menu item, open Metadata, and choose index, follow in Robots. A menu-item override is useful for component pages such as category blogs or lists and for URLs whose metadata is primarily controlled by their menu item rather than a single article.

Check for conflicting SEO layers

SEO extensions, template overrides, CDN edge transformations, or custom plugins can alter metadata after Joomla core builds the document. If the frontend output does not match the Joomla field, inspect those layers before repeatedly resaving the same setting.

Verify the HTML source

Open the exact public URL and inspect the head. Confirm that the effective robots instruction is what you intended. Also ensure the page is publicly reachable with an appropriate success response and is not accidentally blocked by authentication, server rules, or robots.txt.

Do not expect instant indexing

Index, follow permits supporting search engines to index the page and follow its links; it does not guarantee indexing, ranking, or a specific crawl schedule. Search engines decide whether and when to crawl and include a URL based on their own systems.
