How to Set No Index, No Follow in Joomla
Use the setting for the right reason
noindex, nofollow asks supporting crawlers not to index the page and not to follow links discovered on it. It can be appropriate for selected utility, duplicate, or intentionally non-search pages, but it is not a security feature and should never replace Joomla access levels or authentication.
Set it globally only for intentionally hidden sites
System → Global Configuration → Metadata → Robots can apply noindex, nofollow broadly. This may be appropriate for a staging or private-development environment as one layer of protection, but access controls are still required. Avoid leaving a production site globally noindexed after launch.
Apply it to an article
Edit the article and find its Robots metadata field in the Publishing/metadata options. Select noindex, nofollow and save. This creates an explicit instruction for that article view when Joomla's normal metadata path controls the rendered page.
Apply it to a menu item
Edit the relevant menu item, open Metadata, choose noindex, nofollow, and save. This is often the right place for category, list, search, or other component views that do not map cleanly to one article's metadata.
Keep the page crawlable when deindexing
For Google, a crawler must be able to access the page to see its noindex directive. If robots.txt blocks the URL first, Google may not see the page-level noindex instruction. Use access controls for genuinely private content and use noindex for publicly reachable content that should stay out of search.
Verify the exact frontend URL
Inspect the page source and confirm a robots meta element with the intended noindex, nofollow value is present. Test alternate routed URLs if the same content is reachable through more than one menu path. Canonical and duplicate URL behavior should be reviewed separately.
Allow time for search results to update
Changing Joomla metadata does not instantly remove an indexed URL. Search engines generally need to crawl the page again and process the new instruction. If rapid removal is necessary, use the search engine's supported removal workflow in addition to maintaining the correct long-term noindex directive.
