Joomla SEF URLs vs URL Rewriting: What Is the Difference?
SEF URLs and URL rewriting solve different parts of the URL
Joomla's Search Engine Friendly URLs setting changes Joomla's router from query-heavy URLs into readable route segments. URL Rewriting is a separate setting that works with the web server so requests can omit index.php. This distinction matters because SEF routing can work even when server rewriting is disabled.
See the difference in a typical URL
Without SEF, a Joomla link can contain query parameters such as option, view, id, and Itemid. With SEF enabled but URL Rewriting disabled, the readable route normally follows index.php. With both features working, index.php can be removed and the route can begin directly after the domain or Joomla subdirectory.
Enable SEF before troubleshooting rewriting
In System → Global Configuration → Site, confirm Search Engine Friendly URLs is enabled and test the site. Joomla's router uses menu-item and content aliases to build and parse readable routes. If those routes work with index.php present, Joomla routing is functioning and any remaining problem is more likely at the web-server rewrite layer.
URL Rewriting depends on the web server
On Apache, Joomla's supplied htaccess.txt contains rewrite rules and is normally activated as .htaccess before Use URL Rewriting is enabled. The server must permit the required overrides and rewrite functionality. Nginx does not process .htaccess, so its virtual-host configuration needs an equivalent rule such as try_files routing requests to index.php.
Do not confuse rewriting with redirects
A rewrite can internally send a clean request to Joomla's index.php without changing the browser-visible path. A redirect tells the browser or crawler to request a different URL. Joomla and its System - SEF plugin can also perform canonicalization-related redirects, so diagnose the actual HTTP response rather than assuming every URL change is an Apache rewrite.
Test both generated links and direct requests
After changing either setting, navigate through menus and article links, then paste representative clean URLs directly into a new browser request. Test the home page, nested menu routes, component pages, and a known article. A site can generate clean links correctly while the server still fails to route direct clean-URL requests.
Choose the simplest configuration that works reliably
SEF URLs are the Joomla routing feature; URL Rewriting is the optional server-assisted step that removes index.php. If rewriting is not supported by the hosting stack, keep SEF enabled and URL Rewriting disabled until the server configuration is corrected rather than forcing a setting that produces 404 or 500 errors.
