How Joomla Template Overrides Work
Overrides replace extension output at the template layer
Joomla extensions normally render HTML from layout or tmpl files in their own directories. A template override places a corresponding file under the active template so Joomla uses the template copy instead. This lets a site customize generated markup without changing Joomla core or the extension's original output file.
The override path mirrors what is being replaced
Joomla documentation gives examples such as /components/com_content/tmpl/article/default.php being overridden by /templates/cassiopeia/html/com_content/article/default.php, and /modules/mod_login/tmpl/default.php by /templates/cassiopeia/html/mod_login/default.php. Plugin and shared layout overrides follow comparable template html paths.
An override is tied to the active template
Overrides stored in one template are not automatically available to another template. If a page uses a different template or template style based on another installed template, its override set can be different. This is why identifying the active template is an important first troubleshooting step.
A standard override is used automatically
For a normal template override with the matching default filename, Joomla uses the override whenever that output is rendered through the active template. Joomla's template-layout documentation contrasts this with an alternative layout, which has a different filename and must be selected where the extension supports layout selection.
Overrides protect vendor files but still require maintenance
Updating Joomla or an extension normally replaces its distributed files without overwriting the copy in the template's html directory. That protects the customization itself, but upstream output can change. Joomla's override-management features can flag updated files so administrators can review whether an existing override needs adjustment.
Create overrides with Joomla's template tools when possible
Templates: Customise includes a Create Overrides tab that copies supported component, module, plugin, and layout output into the correct template location. This reduces path mistakes and gives Joomla's override-management features a known structure to track.
Use overrides for output, not every kind of customization
Template overrides are best for changing generated markup or layout logic. CSS changes, JavaScript behavior, template parameters, child-template changes, and alternative layouts solve different problems. Choose the narrowest supported mechanism so future Joomla, extension, and template updates remain easier to maintain.
