How to Change a Joomla Module Position

Record the module's current placement

Before moving it, note the current Position, ordering, publication state, menu assignment, access level, and language. This gives you a quick rollback and helps distinguish a position problem from another visibility setting.

Identify the destination position

Check the active template's available positions using its documentation, declared position list, or Joomla's position preview. Position names belong to templates, so a name that worked with an old template may not exist or render in the current one.

Open the module

Go to Content → Site Modules and select the module title. In the module edit form, locate Position. The position selector can show positions associated with installed templates; choose the exact destination supported by the template used on the target page.

Save the new position

Select the destination and save. Changing Position does not by itself alter the module's menu assignment, access, language, or published state. Those settings continue to determine where and for whom the module is eligible to display.

Check ordering in the destination

If several modules share the new position, review their ordering in the Site Modules list. Joomla can render multiple modules in one position, and their configured order affects which appears first. Reorder them if the move produces an unexpected sequence.

Verify the exact frontend routes

Open every important page on which the module is assigned. Menu-specific template styles can mean that a destination position exists on one route but not another. If the module disappears only on certain pages, compare the active template style and menu assignment.

Adjust layout-specific settings if necessary

Moving between a sidebar, top, footer, or other region can change available width and template styling. Review the module's Advanced options, module style, and any template-specific layout choices after the move, but avoid changing unrelated settings unless the new location actually requires it.
