How to Change Joomla Frontend Layout Without Editing Core Files

Choose the Joomla customization layer that matches the change

Use template style settings for supported configuration, module positions and assignments for page composition, template overrides for extension output, alternative layouts where supported, user.css for styling, and child templates for broader template-level changes. Avoid editing Joomla core or distributed extension files because updates can replace those changes.

Use template styles for configurable layout choices

Open System → Templates Panel → Site Template Styles and review the active style. Many templates expose container, navigation, branding, layout, or typography options. If different menu items need different configurations, duplicate a style and use Menu Assignment rather than changing template source code for each page.

Use modules to rearrange secondary page content

Joomla templates define named module positions. Publish or move modules among those positions and use module ordering and Menu Assignment to control where secondary content appears. If needed, enable Preview Module Positions and use tp=1 to see which positions the active template exposes.

Create template overrides for component or module markup

When the HTML structure of component, module, plugin, or shared layout output must change, create a supported template override under the template's html structure. Joomla checks the override before the extension's original layout, allowing customized output without modifying the distributed source file.

Use a child template for larger template-level changes

Joomla supports child templates for designs that need their own template files while inheriting from a parent. Joomla documentation notes that child-template files are not affected by updates to the parent in the same way as direct edits. This can be appropriate for substantial index.php, layout, position, or styling changes.

Keep styling in an update-safe custom stylesheet

For Cassiopeia, Joomla documentation supports creating media/templates/site/cassiopeia/css/user.css through Templates: Customise. Other templates may provide their own custom CSS mechanism. Use the method documented by the template developer instead of modifying generated or distributed CSS files that an update can replace.

Test routes and maintain the customization

Check the home page, articles, category layouts, forms, mobile widths, module assignments, and extension-specific views. After Joomla or extension updates, review overrides against changed upstream layouts. Document which styles, overrides, child-template files, and CSS rules implement the layout so future changes remain maintainable.
