How to Change the Default Joomla Site Template
Confirm the replacement template is installed
In Joomla Administrator, open System and review the Templates panel before changing the default. The replacement site template must already be installed and enabled. If it was just installed, preview it where practical and confirm that its required extensions, framework, and Joomla version support are in place before making it the site's primary presentation layer.
Open Site Template Styles
Go to System → Templates Panel → Site Templates Styles. Joomla manages the active frontend presentation through template styles rather than by selecting a template package alone. The Default column identifies the style Joomla uses when a menu item does not have a more specific template-style assignment.
Set the intended style as the default
Select the style belonging to the template you want to use and choose Default, or use the Default control shown in the styles list. Joomla marks the selected style as the site default. This changes the fallback frontend style; it does not automatically erase menu-specific assignments to other styles.
Check existing menu assignments
Review the Pages or Menu Assignment information for other template styles. Joomla can assign a non-default style to selected menu items, so some pages may intentionally continue using another template after the default changes. Decide whether those assignments should remain or be removed rather than assuming the default setting controls every route.
Review modules and template positions
Different templates can expose different module positions and chrome. After changing the default, verify that menus, login modules, breadcrumbs, banners, custom modules, and other published modules still appear where intended. A module assigned to a position name that the new template does not render can appear to vanish even though it remains published.
Check template-specific configuration and overrides
Open the new template style and review its options, branding, layout, color, typography, and other parameters. Also inspect any template overrides or custom CSS that existed only in the previous template. Joomla does not automatically translate one template's proprietary settings or override files into another template's structure.
Test the frontend before removing the old template
Check the home page, representative menu items, forms, login, mobile layouts, accessibility, and extension views. Keep the previous template installed until the new default is proven stable and you understand any remaining menu assignments. Removing the old template too early can break pages that still depend on its styles or overrides.
