How to Change the Joomla Administrator Template
Verify an alternative Administrator template is installed
Administrator templates control Joomla's backend interface and are separate from Site templates. Before switching, confirm the intended Administrator template is installed, enabled, and compatible with the Joomla version you are running. Keep a second authenticated Administrator session available when testing a third-party backend template so you have a recovery path.
Open Administrator Template Styles
In Joomla Administrator, go to System and use the Templates panel to open Administrator Templates Styles. Joomla separates Site and Administrator template-style lists. Make sure you are working in the Administrator list; changing a Site style will affect the public frontend instead of the backend interface.
Set the intended Administrator style as default
Select the desired Administrator template style and use the Default action. The default marker should move to that style. Joomla then uses it as the normal backend presentation. If the template exposes configurable style parameters, open the style and review them before relying on the new interface for routine administration.
Sign in through a fresh session
Open a private browser window or another browser and sign in to /administrator. Confirm the login screen and backend load completely. Test the main dashboard, menus, list views, edit forms, modal dialogs, media selection, notifications, and save actions. A template that renders the dashboard is not necessarily compatible with every Administrator workflow.
Check accessibility and extension screens
Third-party components can have backend layouts that assume standard Joomla markup, JavaScript, or Bootstrap behavior. Visit the extensions your administrators use most and verify controls remain visible and usable. Also check keyboard navigation, contrast, responsive behavior, and any accessibility requirements important to your team.
Keep the core Administrator template available for recovery
Do not remove Joomla's supported core Administrator template merely because another style is default. If a third-party backend template fails after an update, the core template provides a safer recovery option. Avoid editing core template files directly because Joomla updates can replace those changes.
Revert promptly if administration becomes unreliable
If navigation, forms, JavaScript, or extension screens fail, return to Administrator Templates Styles and restore the known-good default. If the interface is too broken to do that safely, use the recovery method documented by the template vendor or restore from a known-good backup rather than making unverified database changes.
