How to Check Joomla Template Override Status

Open the Site Templates list

In Joomla Administrator, go to System → Site Templates. Find the template used by the affected frontend pages. Joomla's override-management indicators belong to the template that contains the custom override files, so start with the active template rather than an unrelated installed template.

Review the Override Files status

Look at the Override Files column or status indicator for the template. Joomla can flag that a change has been found when an original Joomla or extension layout corresponding to one of the template's overrides has changed. Treat that flag as a review request, not proof that the override is broken.

Open Updated Files

Select the template and open Templates: Customise, then choose Updated Files. This area lists override-related files whose upstream originals changed. The list helps you focus on custom layouts that may need comparison after Joomla or extension updates.

Compare the override with the current original

Select an affected override and use Joomla's original-file or difference view when available. Identify upstream security, accessibility, markup, API, or bug-fix changes separately from your site's customization. Do not automatically overwrite either version.

Test the frontend behavior

Open the exact pages that use the override and test the states the layout can render. An override can remain compatible even when its original changed, while another can fail because it expects old variables or markup. The status indicator tells you to review; frontend and log testing tells you whether behavior is correct.

Resolve reviewed changes deliberately

Merge required upstream changes into the override while preserving the site's intended customization. Keep edits small and use a backup or source control. After testing, use Joomla's available override-management controls to clear or acknowledge the reviewed change rather than ignoring unresolved notices.

Check again after every relevant update

Joomla core and third-party extensions can both provide layouts that templates override. Review override status after either type of update, especially when a release changes frontend output. A routine override check makes upgrade-related display and PHP errors easier to isolate.
