How to Configure a Joomla Template Style

Understand what a template style stores

A Joomla template is the installed design package, while a template style is a saved set of configuration values for that template. One template can therefore have multiple styles with different logos, colors, layouts, or other parameters exposed by the template developer. Joomla uses styles to make those configurations selectable and assignable.

Open the correct style

Go to System → Templates Panel → Site Templates Styles for frontend styles or Administrator Templates Styles for backend styles. Select the style name you want to configure. Confirm the Template column identifies the package you expect before changing parameters, especially when several similarly named styles exist.

Review the style's template-specific options

The available fields depend on the template. Core and third-party templates can expose different controls for branding, layout, typography, colors, containers, navigation, or other design features. Change only settings you understand and record important existing values before a major redesign so you can restore them if necessary.

Give duplicated styles meaningful names

When you need a variation, duplicate an existing style instead of repeatedly reconfiguring the only working style. Rename the duplicate to describe its purpose, such as Home, Landing Pages, or Members. Joomla's styles list is easier to maintain when names explain why several configurations of the same template exist.

Configure menu assignment intentionally

For Site styles, use Menu Assignment when a style should apply only to selected menu items. Joomla's template-style system can override the default style for those menu routes. Leave the style unassigned when it should not replace the default anywhere, or make it the default only when it should be the fallback across the site.

Save and inspect the affected pages

After saving, open the exact menu items that use the style and verify the visible result. Check modules, template positions, headings, navigation, responsive layouts, and extension output. Clear only relevant template, Joomla, optimization, or CDN caches if an old style continues to appear.

Document dependencies before future changes

Record which style is default, which menu items use alternatives, and which custom CSS, overrides, modules, or template framework settings depend on each style. This prevents a later administrator from deleting or changing a style that appears redundant but is actually responsible for a specific group of pages.
