How to Diagnose a Joomla Template That Breaks After an Update
Determine exactly what changed
Record whether the break followed a Joomla core update, template update, extension update, PHP change, or several changes together. Capture the old and new versions from backups, update history, release notes, or hosting records. Avoid making unrelated fixes until you can reproduce the failure, because additional changes make the original compatibility problem harder to isolate.
Check frontend and Administrator separately
Load representative frontend pages and confirm Administrator still works. Record PHP errors, HTTP status codes, missing assets, JavaScript console errors, and layout failures. A template problem can be limited to a specific style or menu assignment, while a PHP compatibility error can stop every page using the template. Preserve logs before clearing caches or rolling back.
Review template overrides after the update
Open System → Templates → Site Templates and inspect the active template's customisation area. Joomla's override-management features can flag overrides whose original source files changed during updates. Compare flagged overrides with the current upstream layouts and preserve only the intentional customization while incorporating required markup, variable, accessibility, or behavior changes.
Check template styles and menu assignments
Open System → Templates → Site Templates Styles and confirm the expected style remains default or assigned to the affected menu items. Joomla supports different template styles per menu item, so one section can break while another remains normal. Compare the failing route with a working route before assuming the template package itself is universally broken.
Check third-party extensions and frontend assets
A template often integrates module chrome, frameworks, JavaScript libraries, CSS processors, or plugins supplied outside Joomla core. Review browser Network and Console output and PHP logs for the first failing asset or class. Update dependent extensions to compatible releases and temporarily disable optimization layers on staging if they hide the original files or ordering.
Compare against a clean supported template on staging
If the cause is still unclear, assign a known working installed template style to a controlled test menu item or staging route. Joomla template styles can be assigned per menu item, allowing a limited comparison without immediately changing the whole site's default style. If the same content works there, focus on the original template, overrides, and template-specific extensions.
Repair forward instead of preserving incompatible code
Use the template vendor's Joomla-compatible release, update overrides, move customizations into supported child-template or override locations, and meet the current Joomla/PHP requirements. Do not permanently solve an update break by restoring obsolete core files. After repair, test all template styles, menu assignments, modules, forms, responsive layouts, and frontend JavaScript.
