How to Install a Joomla Template
Check compatibility before installing
Obtain the template from its developer or another trusted source and confirm that the release supports the site's Joomla and PHP versions. Read the vendor's installation notes because some commercial templates are delivered inside a larger download bundle and the actual installable Joomla package may be a separate ZIP file.
Back up and test away from production when practical
Take a current backup of the Joomla files and database before introducing a new third-party template. Joomla's extension-installation guidance recommends testing new extensions on a local or test site rather than experimenting on the live site. This is especially useful when the template includes companion plugins or framework packages.
Open Joomla's extension installer
In Administrator, go to System → Install → Extensions. Current Joomla help identifies this as the standard extension installation screen. Templates are Joomla extensions, so they use the same package installer as components, modules, plugins, languages, and packages.
Upload the installable template package
Use Upload Package File for the normal installation method and select the template's installable archive. Joomla also supports other installer methods when appropriate, including Install from Folder and, depending on the setup, Install from Web or URL. Do not manually copy files into /templates and assume the extension is fully installed.
Confirm Joomla reports a successful installation
Wait for the installer result and address any error before continuing. Common failures can involve an incompatible package, upload-size limits, an incorrect temporary path, permissions, or a bundle that must be unpacked first. Do not repeatedly upload the same package without reading the reported failure.
Find the installed template and its styles
After installation, open System → Templates. A site template appears in the site template/template-style areas; an administrator template appears in the Administrator equivalents. Joomla templates can expose configurable style parameters through their manifest, so review the vendor's recommended settings before making the template active.
Preview and activate only after verification
Installing a template does not necessarily make it the site's default. Review its template styles, module positions, required companion extensions, and frontend rendering first. When ready, set the intended style as default or assign it according to the site's design plan, then test menus, modules, forms, responsive layouts, and error pages.
