How to Recover Joomla After a Broken Template Change
Use Administrator if the backend still works
A frontend template failure does not necessarily affect Joomla Administrator because Site and Administrator templates are managed separately. Log in to Administrator directly and open System → Templates → Site Templates Styles. Record the current default style and page assignments before changing anything so you can identify the broken change and preserve evidence.
Restore a known working site template style
If another working site template style is installed, select it in Site Templates Styles and make it the default for the frontend. Joomla's styles screen supports choosing the default style for pages. Check for explicit menu-item assignments as well, because those routes can continue using a different style even after the global default changes.
Reverse the smallest recent template change
If the failure came from a style option, custom CSS, JavaScript, override, or template file edit, restore that specific item from a known-good copy or version control rather than replacing the entire site. Joomla documentation warns against editing distributed default-template files because updates can overwrite changes; keep customizations in supported override or custom locations.
Use hosting file access when frontend and backend are both inaccessible
If a template PHP error prevents useful Administrator access, use the hosting file manager, SFTP, or SSH to inspect logs and the changed template files. Restore only the known-bad customization from backup. Do not delete the active template directory or rename Joomla core folders blindly, because database style assignments and dependencies can remain inconsistent.
Check PHP and browser errors after access is restored
Once the site renders again, inspect PHP logs and the browser Console/Network panels to identify the actual failure. A broken change may be invalid PHP, missing classes, malformed markup, CSS, JavaScript, an incompatible override, or an asset path. Recovery gets the site accessible; diagnosis prevents the same change from breaking it again.
Verify every menu-specific template style
Joomla can assign template styles to individual menu items. Test the home page and representative menu routes and review the Pages/Menu Assignment information in Site Templates Styles. A global recovery can look successful while one menu item still points to the broken style. Restore or correct those assignments deliberately.
Move the permanent fix into an update-safe customization
After identifying the cause, implement the intended change using the template's supported custom CSS, child-template, override, or style configuration mechanism. Test on staging, keep a backup, and document the changed files and style assignments. Avoid a permanent recovery that depends on editing Joomla core or vendor files that future updates will replace.
