How to Remove a Broken Joomla Template Override

Confirm the override is the cause

Before deleting anything, identify the exact override and reproduce the failure. Compare the page with the current upstream layout and, on staging, temporarily move or rename the override so Joomla can fall back to the original output. If the error remains, the override was not the only cause.

Back up the override and relevant configuration

Save a copy of the file and take an appropriate backup before removal. Record its path, template, source extension, and the page that uses it. A broken override can still contain intentional business logic or markup that you may need to reimplement safely against the current source.

Remove or rename only the confirmed override

Use Templates: Customise or the filesystem to remove the specific override file. Do not delete the entire template html directory because one layout is broken. Component, module, plugin, and shared-layout overrides can coexist there and may support unrelated pages.

Let Joomla fall back to the source layout

Joomla searches override locations before the original layout. When a matching override is no longer present, Joomla can use the upstream component or layout output instead. Test that fallback immediately. If the page still fails, investigate the extension, data, template, and PHP error separately.

Clear only relevant caches

After removing the override, clear Joomla, template framework, optimization, opcode, or CDN caches only where they could preserve old rendered output or code. Retest in a fresh browser session. Do not use broad cache deletion as a substitute for confirming which file Joomla is executing.

Rebuild the customization from the current source if needed

If the site still needs the customization, create a fresh override from Joomla's current source using the Create Overrides tools where supported. Reapply only the necessary changes instead of restoring an outdated file wholesale. This reduces the chance of reintroducing the incompatibility.

Review override update notifications

If Joomla had flagged the override under Updated Files, resolve that review after the replacement or removal is tested. Keep a note of what was removed and why. If the override belonged to a third-party extension, retest after future extension updates because its upstream layout may continue to change.
