How to Temporarily Switch Templates for Troubleshooting
Make sure a second site template is installed and usable
Before switching anything, confirm another frontend template and style are installed. Joomla's Template Styles screen manages Site and Administrator styles separately, so work only with Site Templates Styles for frontend troubleshooting. Record the current default style and any menu-specific style assignments so the original configuration can be restored exactly.
Prefer a limited menu-item test when possible
For a production site, a menu-specific comparison is safer than changing the default for every visitor. Joomla template styles can be assigned to individual menu items. Choose a controlled test menu item or staging route, assign the alternate style there, save, and compare the same component content under the alternate template.
Use the default style only when a site-wide test is intended
If the problem affects the entire frontend and a broad switch is acceptable, open System → Templates → Site Templates Styles, select the alternate style, and make it the default. Joomla marks the default style in the styles list. Remember that explicit menu-item style assignments can still cause some pages to use another style.
Keep content and extension settings unchanged during the comparison
A useful template test changes one variable: the template style. Do not simultaneously move modules, rewrite menu assignments, disable plugins, or alter content unless required to make the test route accessible. If the problem disappears under the alternate template, investigate the original template, its overrides, assets, module chrome, and template-specific plugins.
Check module positions before judging the alternate template
Templates define their own module positions. A module can disappear after the switch simply because the alternate template does not render the same position name. That does not prove the module or content is broken. Focus first on the original symptom, then account for expected layout differences caused by the temporary template.
Restore the original style and assignments after testing
Return the default star and any menu-specific Template Style assignments to the values you recorded before the test. Reload the exact routes and confirm they again use the intended template. If caching is enabled, clear only the relevant cache after restoring configuration so old rendered output does not confuse the verification.
Use the result to narrow the fault domain
If the problem follows the original template but not the alternate template, concentrate on that template's files, overrides, CSS, JavaScript, framework, and compatibility. If the problem remains under both templates, investigate the component, module, plugin, content, server, or Joomla core instead. The temporary switch is a diagnostic comparison, not the final repair.
