How to Troubleshoot Joomla CSS Not Updating

Confirm the file you edited is actually loaded

Open browser developer tools and inspect the Network or Sources panel for the stylesheet. Reload the page and open the returned CSS. If your new rule is absent, you may have edited the wrong template, wrong style, wrong file, or a source file that must be compiled before Joomla serves the resulting asset.

For Cassiopeia, use the supported user.css location

Joomla's Cassiopeia documentation supports a user.css file created through System → Site Templates → Cassiopeia Details and Files in the css folder. Avoid editing template.css or template.min.css for ordinary site customization because distributed template assets can be replaced by Joomla updates.

Check browser, Joomla, optimization, and CDN caches

Perform a hard refresh or disable cache in developer tools while testing. Clear relevant Joomla cache and any template framework, CSS optimization, reverse-proxy, or CDN cache that can retain an older asset. If filenames include version strings or hashes, confirm the page references the current asset.

Inspect the cascade instead of assuming the file is stale

If the new declaration is present in the loaded stylesheet but the appearance does not change, inspect the element. Another selector may have greater specificity, load later, use !important, or apply only at the current breakpoint. The Styles and Computed panels show which declaration actually wins.

Check syntax around the new rule

A missing brace, malformed comment, invalid at-rule, or accidental nesting can cause the browser to ignore part of a stylesheet. Developer tools may flag parse problems. Validate the affected section and temporarily reduce the change to one simple declaration to determine whether the problem is syntax or cascade.

Check template and page context

Confirm the page is using the template style you think it is. Joomla can assign different template styles to different menu items, and child templates or third-party frameworks can load different CSS bundles. A change visible on one route but not another often points to style assignment or asset differences.

Verify the fix with a clean request

After correcting the source, cache, or cascade problem, reload in a private browser window and inspect the network response again. Confirm the current CSS contains the intended rule and that the Computed panel shows it winning. Then test representative pages and viewport sizes before considering the issue resolved.
