How to Check for Joomla Extension Updates
Joomla checks for third-party extension updates through update sites registered by installed extensions. The Extensions Update screen shows the updates Joomla can currently identify for this site, but an empty list does not prove that every extension is current—an extension may not use Joomla's update system, its update site may be disabled, or access to the vendor may be failing.
Open the Extensions Update screen and refresh it
- Sign in to Joomla Administrator.
- Go to System → Update → Extensions.
- Select Find Updates to query the configured update sites for current information.
- Review each result, including the extension name and available version, before installing anything.
Find Updates refreshes what Joomla knows about available extension releases. The separate Clear Cache action clears the stored available-update information from the listing; it is useful when the displayed update records are stale, but you should run Find Updates afterward to repopulate current results.
Understand why some installed extensions do not appear
Joomla's update screen only lists updates that the extension's update mechanism makes available to the site. An extension can be absent for several reasons:
- the installed version is already current for this Joomla/PHP/database environment;
- the extension does not support Joomla's update system;
- its update site is disabled, missing, or unreachable;
- the vendor's update metadata does not offer a package matching the current environment;
- a commercial extension requires a valid download key or subscription;
- the server cannot reach the vendor because of DNS, TLS, proxy, firewall, or network restrictions.
For important extensions, compare Joomla's result with the vendor's current release information rather than assuming no listed update means no newer version exists.
Check the extension's Update Site when an expected update is missing
Go to System → Update → Update Sites. Find the entry associated with the extension and confirm that it is enabled. Joomla's current help screen also exposes the update-site URL and, where applicable, a Download Key field.
If the update-site table appears damaged or entries are missing, the Update Sites screen provides a Rebuild action to reconstruct update-site records from installed extension manifests. Rebuild is preferable to inventing update-site URLs by hand.
After correcting the update site or download key, return to System → Update → Extensions and run Find Updates again.
Review the available version before installing it
Finding an update and installing it are separate decisions. Before selecting Update, read the developer's changelog and compatibility information. Confirm the release supports your Joomla and PHP versions and whether it requires an intermediate extension version or migration step.
Create a restorable files-and-database backup before production updates. For critical extensions or large version jumps, perform the same update on staging first.
Verify that your update check is working
After running Find Updates, a healthy result may legitimately be an empty list. What matters is that the expected update sites are enabled and reachable and that Joomla does not report network or update-site errors.
If multiple unrelated vendors suddenly stop returning updates, suspect the hosting environment before assuming every vendor changed at once. Check outbound HTTPS access, DNS resolution, PHP/network configuration, and server logs. If only one extension is affected, focus on that extension's update-site record, download credentials, and vendor status.
