How to Find the Installed Joomla Database Schema Version

Understand the schema version

Joomla tracks database schema progress separately from the human-facing extension version. Schema versions correspond to SQL update scripts that have been processed. Joomla stores schema-version records in the #__schemas table, where #__ represents the site's configured database prefix.

Use Joomla's Database screen for normal health checks

If you only need to know whether the Joomla database is current, start at System → Maintenance → Database. This screen compares database structure with Joomla's expected state and reports problems. A healthy structural result is more useful than a schema string in isolation.

Find the Joomla core schema owner

For direct inspection, identify the Joomla core files extension record in #__extensions. Joomla documentation identifies files_joomla as the core schema owner. Its extension_id links to the corresponding record in #__schemas.

Read version_id without modifying it

In phpMyAdmin or another database client, use a read-only join after replacing #__ with the real prefix: SELECT s.version_id FROM #__schemas AS s INNER JOIN #__extensions AS e ON e.extension_id=s.extension_id WHERE e.name='files_joomla'; This reads the stored schema version without changing Joomla.

Compare with Joomla's update scripts

Core database update scripts live under administrator/components/com_admin/sql/updates in database-specific subdirectories. Joomla's Database tool uses outstanding scripts to bring structure current. Do not assume schema version_id must equal the marketing Joomla version character-for-character.

Do not edit #__schemas to silence a warning

A missing or mismatched schema record can indicate an incomplete update or nonstandard installation. Changing version_id does not apply missing columns, indexes, or table changes. Use System → Maintenance → Database and Update Structure first, and investigate SQL errors that block it.

Treat manual schema repair as exceptional

Joomla documentation describes direct repair of a missing core schema record for specific abnormal cases, but that is not the routine update method. Before direct repair, take a verified backup and establish the actual core files version and available SQL scripts.

Verify the complete installation

After repair, return to System → Maintenance → Database and confirm the structure is current. Test Administrator and frontend functions and review logs. The goal is consistency among program files, schema history, and actual table structure.
