How to Fix a Joomla Extension Update Download Failure
Separate discovery from download
If an update is listed but fails after you choose Update, discovery succeeded. The failure is later: metadata retrieval, package download, temporary storage, or installation.
Capture the exact failure
Record Joomla's message, HTTP status if any, extension/version, timestamp, and PHP/web-server logs.
Check source and package host
Joomla reads update metadata and then downloads the package it specifies. Verify the Update Site URL and compare the advertised release with current vendor documentation.
Check commercial credentials
Joomla supports download keys through compatible extension manifests and the Update Sites interface. Confirm any required key/subscription is current.
Test server-side package access
Check DNS, TLS, outbound HTTPS/firewall rules, redirects, CDN restrictions, and whether the package host accepts the Joomla server's request.
Check temporary storage
Confirm Joomla's temporary path is writable with enough disk space and review relevant PHP limits/timeouts.
Respect checksum failures
Update metadata can publish SHA checksums and Joomla stops when a supplied checksum does not match. Do not bypass that protection; obtain corrected package/metadata.
Use supported manual installation if necessary
If the vendor documents manual package installation as supported, back up and use Joomla's normal extension installer rather than overwriting files.
Verify recovery
Confirm the installed version, test important functions, and review logs. Restore the pre-update backup if a failed attempt left uncertain state.
