How to Fix a Joomla Update That Stalls or Freezes
Do not assume a still progress bar means nothing happened
An update can appear stalled while downloading or processing. Avoid refreshing or starting a second update immediately.
Check logs and activity
Determine whether the request is downloading, extracting, writing files, running database changes, or has terminated.
Check network and time limits
Slow connectivity or a constrained server can exceed PHP, PHP-FPM, web-server, proxy, CPU, or execution limits.
Check disk space and temp storage
The server needs room for the archive and extracted files; confirm the Joomla temporary directory is writable.
Check ownership and permissions
Use the exact log error to fix ownership or writable-path problems. Do not make Joomla files broadly world-writable.
Treat interruption as potentially partial
If the process terminated, verify state before restarting and restore the pre-update backup if consistency is uncertain.
Test the correction on staging
Repeat the target update on a representative staging copy.
Verify completion
Confirm the Joomla version, check database maintenance, clear relevant caches, and test important workflows.
