How to Fix an Extension Whose Database Updated but Files Did Not

Recognize a database-ahead-of-files mismatch

This condition occurs when database migrations for a newer extension release were applied but some or all matching package files were not installed. Older code may then query changed tables incorrectly, call outdated APIs, or fail because the database structure now belongs to a newer release.

Stop making unrelated changes

Record the extension name, the version Joomla reports, the package version you intended to install, and the exact error. Take a complete files-and-database backup of the current state. Avoid manually reversing columns or tables because extension migrations can include data transformations that are not safely reversible by guessing.

Confirm what version the files represent

Inspect the installed extension manifest and, when appropriate, compare key files with a clean copy of the intended vendor package. Check whether the failed update left extraction or permission errors in the server logs. Establish whether the filesystem is incomplete, still on the old release, or contains a mixture of releases.

Understand why the database can be ahead

Joomla extension packages may contain numbered SQL update scripts. Joomla tracks the last processed extension SQL version separately from the manifest version. A partially failed installation, manual file deployment, permissions problem, or custom update process can therefore leave code and schema at different points even when one version indicator looks correct.

Restore the matching files through a supported package

Obtain the exact legitimate package that corresponds to the database migration that completed. If the extension developer supports reinstalling that release over the existing extension, use Joomla's installer or the vendor's documented recovery process so the package can restore all required files. Do not uninstall first unless the vendor explicitly instructs you to.

Use a backup when the matching package cannot restore consistency

If you cannot establish a supported forward repair, restore the complete pre-update backup rather than mixing old files with a newer database or attempting an improvised database downgrade. Restore files and database from the same recovery point so they return to a consistent extension version.

Test after files and schema are aligned

Verify Administrator and frontend behavior, extension-specific jobs and integrations, and any data modified by the update. Review PHP and web-server logs and confirm the extension's manifest and schema state are consistent with the installed package. Only then resume other Joomla or extension updates.
