How to Fix an Extension Whose Files Updated but Database Did Not

Recognize a files-ahead-of-database update

This failure usually appears when an extension's package files are from a newer release but the database changes expected by that release were not applied. Symptoms can include missing-table or missing-column errors, Administrator pages that fail after the update, or an extension that reports a newer package version while its stored schema version remains behind.

Back up before attempting a repair

Create a current backup of both the Joomla files and database before rerunning an installer or changing schema records. Preserve the failed state long enough to record the extension name, installed version, error text, and relevant logs. Test the repair on a staging copy first when the extension is important to the site.

Understand how Joomla tracks extension SQL updates

Joomla extension manifests can define a schemas path containing numbered SQL update files. Joomla separately tracks the extension manifest version in the extensions table and the last processed SQL schema version in the schemas table. During an extension update, Joomla uses the stored schema version to decide which later SQL update files need to run.

Check the extension package and vendor instructions

Confirm that you have the correct complete update package for the installed extension and Joomla version. Review the developer's release notes for required intermediate versions, migration tools, or post-update steps. Do not copy database changes from another version merely because a table or column name looks similar.

Prefer the extension's supported repair or reinstall path

If the vendor supports installing the same current package over the existing installation, that can be safer than manually editing tables because Joomla's installer can process the extension manifest and update logic. Some extensions provide their own database repair or migration command. Follow the vendor's documented recovery path when one exists.

Inspect schema state only when necessary

For advanced diagnosis, identify the extension's extension_id and compare its manifest version with its entry in the Joomla schemas table and with the SQL update files actually shipped in the package. A missing, stale, or incorrect schema record can change which scripts Joomla considers pending. Do not change that record just to make an error disappear.

Verify the repaired extension

After the supported repair completes, confirm the extension loads in Administrator and on the frontend, exercise its important workflows, and review the error logs. Verify that expected database objects now exist and that the extension's schema state reflects the SQL updates that were actually processed. Keep the backup until the repaired installation is proven stable.
