How to Fix HTTP 404 Errors from a Joomla Extension Update Site
Confirm the 404 source
Identify whether 404 comes from the update XML URL or from the package URL referenced by valid metadata.
Inspect Update Sites
Go to System → Update → Update Sites, record the exact URL, and compare it with current vendor documentation.
Test the URL
A normal Joomla extension update source returns XML metadata. A 404 confirms the requested path is missing.
Check for moved infrastructure
Use only a replacement URL supplied by the extension developer; do not invent one from the old path.
Rebuild when the manifest is correct
If the installed manifest declares the correct server but Joomla's stored association is stale, use Rebuild rather than manually creating database rows.
Check package URLs
If XML discovery succeeds but Update produces 404, the metadata may point to a missing package, normally a vendor-side problem.
Refresh after repair
Clear stale extension-update information when appropriate and run Find Updates.
Escalate with evidence
Give the vendor the sanitized URL, extension/version, Joomla version, timestamp, and whether the 404 occurs during XML discovery or package download.
