How to Fix Joomla Update Database Errors
Capture the database error first
Record the exact SQL/database error, Joomla version being installed, timestamp, and database server version. Do not manually alter tables until you know whether the failure is a missing schema update, damaged table, permission issue, unsupported server version, or extension-specific error.
Use Joomla's Database check
Open System → Maintenance → Database. Current Joomla help describes this screen as checking whether the database table structure matches the Joomla program files and identifying schema problems left by a failed or manual update.
Run Update Structure for Joomla schema problems
If Joomla reports core schema inconsistencies, select the Joomla CMS entry and use Update Structure. Joomla runs database schema-change scripts that were not completed during the version update and then checks the schema again.
Read any error that remains
If Update Structure fails, capture its exact database error instead of repeatedly clicking it. Check database-user privileges, storage space, table health, SQL-mode/version compatibility, and the failing SQL statement.
Distinguish core schema errors from extension errors
A third-party extension can also fail while running its own database migrations. Joomla's core Database repair is not a substitute for an extension vendor's migration or recovery procedure.
Do not invent schema changes
Avoid manually adding columns, indexes, or schema-version records based on guesses. Direct changes can hide the original failure while leaving the database inconsistent with the installed Joomla files.
Restore when file and database versions are uncertain
If a failed update left Joomla program files at one version and the database at an unknown intermediate state, restoring the complete matching pre-update files-and-database backup is safer than stacking speculative repairs.
Verify synchronization
After repair or a successful rerun, the Database screen should report the structure up to date. Confirm the Joomla version and test Administrator, frontend, authentication, content editing, and other important workflows.
