How to Fix Joomla “Update Site Could Not Be Opened”
Identify the failed source
An “Update Site Could Not Be Opened” warning indicates Joomla could not successfully obtain or use an update source. Locate it under System → Update → Update Sites and record the exact URL.
Test the URL
A valid extension update source normally returns XML metadata. HTTP 403/404/500, certificate errors, timeouts, or unrelated HTML point to an access/source problem.
Check DNS TLS and outbound HTTPS
Confirm the Joomla server can resolve the hostname and connect over HTTPS. Hosting firewalls, proxies, or security controls can block requests that work from your workstation.
Check for a vendor URL change
Compare the stored URL with current developer documentation or a supported current package. Do not guess a replacement URL.
Rebuild damaged registration
If the installed manifest declares the correct server but Joomla's registration is damaged, use Update Sites Rebuild rather than manually constructing rows.
Refresh after repair
Clear stale extension-update information when appropriate and run Find Updates again.
Disable only intentionally
Disabling a broken source suppresses discovery from it. Do this only when the extension is retired, updates are managed another supported way, or the developer directs it.
