How to Rebuild Missing Joomla Extension Update Sites

Joomla normally registers an extension's update site from information declared by the extension itself. If update-site records are missing or damaged, use Joomla's Rebuild tool before considering any manual database work. Rebuild reconstructs the update-site table from the manifests of installed extensions, which is safer than inventing URLs or database rows.

Confirm the update site is really missing

  1. Sign in to Joomla Administrator.
  2. Go to System → Update → Update Sites.
  3. Clear search and filter controls so a disabled or filtered source is not mistaken for a missing one.
  4. Search for the extension name, package name, or vendor.
  5. Record any related sources that are already present, including their enabled state and URL.

A package can register more than one update source, so do not assume that a single missing component-named row means the entire product has lost its update configuration.

Back up the database, then use Update Sites Rebuild

Create a current database backup before repairing extension-management metadata. In System → Update → Update Sites, select Rebuild from the toolbar. Joomla reconstructs and refreshes the update-site records using update-server information available from installed extension manifests.

Rebuild is designed for cases where the update-site table has become incomplete or corrupted. It does not install an extension update and it does not change the extension's code.

Understand what Rebuild cannot recreate

Rebuild can only recover information that the installed extension actually declares. If an old or custom extension has no Joomla <updateservers> declaration, Joomla has no authoritative source from which to reconstruct an update site.

If the expected source is still absent after Rebuild:

  • confirm the extension is still installed;
  • check the installed package/version against the developer's current supported release;
  • review the extension manifest for an update-server declaration if you are comfortable inspecting extension files;
  • check whether the vendor uses a proprietary updater instead of Joomla's update system;
  • obtain the supported package or repair procedure from the extension developer rather than guessing a URL.

Refresh extension update discovery after rebuilding

  1. Go to System → Update → Extensions.
  2. If stale available-update records are present, use Clear Cache on that screen.
  3. Select Find Updates.
  4. Check whether the extension and expected available version now appear.

A restored update site does not guarantee that an update will be listed. Joomla still evaluates the update metadata and may exclude releases that do not match the site's Joomla, PHP, or database requirements.

If the rebuilt site exists but still does not work

Open the Update Sites list again and verify that the source is enabled and points to the expected vendor. For a commercial extension, check whether a valid download key or subscription is required. Also verify that the hosting server can make outbound HTTPS requests to the update source.

If the source repeatedly disappears after reinstalling or updating the extension, or the manifest no longer declares the vendor's current update service, involve the extension developer. Avoid hand-creating update-site database rows unless you are following a documented vendor or Joomla development procedure and have a recovery backup.
