How to Recover from a Failed Joomla Core Update

Stop making changes and preserve evidence

Record the update target, exact error, timestamp, current visible Joomla version, and PHP/web-server/database logs. Do not immediately rerun Joomla Update because the first attempt may have changed files or database state.

Determine how far the core update progressed

Joomla core update includes downloading the package, extracting/replacing files, removing obsolete files, and final database administration. Use the error and logs to determine whether failure occurred before files changed or after the site entered a partial state.

Use the pre-update backup when state is uncertain

If frontend or Administrator is broken, the installed file version is unclear, or database changes cannot be confidently matched to the files, restore the complete files-and-database backup taken immediately before the update.

If Administrator works, check the database structure

Open System → Maintenance → Database. Joomla's current help says Update Structure can run schema scripts that did not complete during an update. Use it only after preserving a backup and when the site's file state is understood.

Address the original cause before another attempt

Fix the specific download, extraction, permission, timeout, disk-space, PHP/server, database, or compatibility problem shown by the logs. A retry without correcting the cause can leave the site in a worse state.

Reproduce the recovery and update on staging

Restore or clone the known-good site to staging, apply the same environmental correction, and run the same target update. Test Administrator, frontend, authentication, templates, extensions, scheduled tasks, and integrations.

Retry production from a known-good state

Start from the restored or verified pre-update state with a fresh restorable backup. Use Joomla's normal Update component and allow the process to complete without parallel installation or deployment activity.

Verify the recovered site

Confirm the installed Joomla version, verify the Database screen is up to date, clear relevant caches, review logs, and test the site's important workflows before deleting the rollback backup.
