How to Recover from a Failed Joomla Extension Update

Preserve the failed-update evidence

Record the extension name, old and target versions, exact Joomla error, timestamp, and PHP/web-server/database logs. Do not repeatedly run the update while the resulting extension state is unknown.

Determine what the extension installer changed

Extension updates can replace files, run SQL migrations, and execute installer-script logic. A failure may occur before any changes, or after only part of the update completed.

Check whether the site and Administrator still work

If the extension is nonessential and the vendor documents a safe disable procedure, disable it through Joomla while investigating. If it blocks Administrator, follow the vendor's documented emergency recovery method rather than deleting extension records or random files.

Use the pre-update backup for uncertain partial state

When you cannot establish which files or database migrations completed, restore the matching files-and-database backup from immediately before the extension update. Restoring only files can leave the extension database schema at a different version.

Read the vendor's recovery and upgrade path

Confirm whether the target release supports a direct update from the installed version, requires an intermediate release, changes PHP/Joomla requirements, or has a documented repair/reinstall procedure.

Correct the original cause

Fix the actual download-key, package-download, permission, PHP/server-limit, database, dependency, or compatibility problem shown by the failure. Do not use a manual file overwrite as a substitute for installer scripts and migrations.

Test the exact recovery on staging

On a representative copy, start from the known-good pre-update state, apply the vendor-supported update path, and test the extension's Administrator/frontend features plus integrations and scheduled work.

Retry production and verify

Take a fresh backup, run the supported update, confirm the installed extension version, test its critical functions, and review logs. Keep the rollback backup until the site and extension have passed verification.
