How to Update Joomla Extensions

Back up before updating third-party code

Take a current files-and-database backup before extension updates, especially on production. Extension updates can replace files, run database migrations, and execute installer-script logic.

Open the extension update screen

In Administrator go to System → Update → Extensions. Joomla's extension update system lists updates that installed extensions and their configured update sites make available to this site.

Refresh the list when necessary

Use Find Updates when you need Joomla to query the configured extension update sites again. Joomla evaluates update metadata, including version and any platform, PHP, or database restrictions supplied by the extension developer.

Review each update before installing it

Read the extension developer's changelog and requirements. Check whether the release supports your Joomla/PHP versions, whether it contains a major migration, and whether the developer requires an intermediate version or other preparation.

Update deliberately

Select the extension update you intend to apply and use Update. For critical extensions, large version jumps, or multiple interdependent products, update on staging first and follow the vendor's recommended order rather than bulk-updating blindly.

Understand what Joomla downloads

For an extension using Joomla's update system, Joomla retrieves update metadata from the configured update site and then obtains the applicable update package. Authentication/download-key requirements are extension-specific and may prevent a commercial extension from downloading even when an update is listed.

Verify the installed version and function

After the update, confirm the extension's installed version under System → Manage → Extensions or its own interface. Test the extension's primary frontend and Administrator workflows and review logs for errors.

Handle a failed update as a recovery event

Do not repeatedly press Update after an unexplained failure. Capture the exact error, check whether the extension left partial files/database changes, follow the developer's recovery guidance, and restore the pre-update backup when the state is uncertain.
