How to Update Joomla Safely

Treat every update as a change to both files and database

A Joomla core update can replace application files and apply database schema changes. Take a complete, restorable backup of both files and database before starting, and know how you would restore it if Administrator becomes unavailable.

Confirm the target update and environment

Open the Joomla Update component from the Administrator System dashboard. Review the target Joomla version and the pre-update information. For a major-version upgrade, verify the site's PHP/database environment meets the target release requirements before proceeding.

Review third-party extension compatibility

Use the Pre-Update Check as useful evidence, but verify important third-party extensions with their developers. Joomla's own documentation warns that compatibility information depends on extension developers supplying correct update metadata, so it should not be your only source of truth.

Resolve warnings and update dependencies first

Update or replace incompatible extensions as directed by their developers. For a Joomla 5.4 to 6.x upgrade, current Joomla documentation specifically requires the Behaviour - Backward Compatibility 6 plugin to be installed and enabled, while the older Joomla 5 Behaviour - Backward Compatibility plugin must be disabled before Live Update can proceed.

Test the upgrade on staging

For a major upgrade or an important production site, clone the site and run the complete update there first. Test Administrator, frontend, templates, authentication, forms, scheduled work, and business-critical third-party extensions.

Run the Joomla Update component

When the backup and checks are complete, use Joomla's core Update component rather than manually replacing core files. Confirm the backup acknowledgement when prompted and allow the update process to finish without closing the request unnecessarily.

Check the database and site after updating

Confirm the displayed Joomla version, then check System → Maintenance → Database for schema problems and use Joomla's repair/update-structure action if Joomla reports inconsistencies. Clear relevant caches and review PHP/server logs.

Keep the rollback point until verification is complete

Test frontend and Administrator workflows before deleting the backup or staging snapshot. If the update produced serious unexplained failures, restore the known-good backup rather than stacking speculative fixes onto a partially working production site.
