How to Configure Joomla User Registration
Joomla's user-registration policy is configured in Users → Manage → Options. A safe configuration considers whether registration is allowed, which group receives new accounts, how accounts are activated, whether administrators are notified, CAPTCHA, and password/reset policy. Configure the policy as a whole instead of changing only the registration switch.
Open Users: Options
- Sign in to Joomla Administrator.
- Open Users → Manage.
- Select Options.
- Review the User Options, Password Options, and other relevant tabs/sections exposed by the installed Joomla version.
Configure the registration policy
Allow User Registration controls core frontend self-registration. New User Registration Group determines the group assigned to self-registered accounts; Joomla's documented default is Registered. Choose a custom group only when its viewing access and action permissions have been deliberately audited.
Choose account activation
New User Account Activation provides documented choices of None, Self, and Administrator. None activates the account without an activation step. Self sends the user an activation link. Administrator requires the user to complete the emailed link and then requires administrator activation. Select the workflow that matches how strongly you need to validate and approve new accounts.
Configure administrator notification and CAPTCHA
Send Mail to Administrators can notify administrators for applicable activation modes. The Captcha option controls the CAPTCHA used for user registration and account-reminder/reset forms. CAPTCHA availability depends on the CAPTCHA plugins/services configured on the site, so verify the selected provider on the real registration form.
Review password and reset controls
Users: Options also exposes password-policy fields such as minimum length and character requirements, plus reset-count and reset-time controls. These are distinct from account activation. Use a policy appropriate for the site and current organizational requirements rather than copying arbitrary values from another installation.
Provide and test a registration route
Joomla's Login module can expose Create an Account when registration is enabled, and Joomla also provides a registration-form menu item type. Test the complete flow in a private browser session: form submission, CAPTCHA if used, email receipt, activation, administrator approval if selected, and first login.
Check custom extensions
Membership, community, e-commerce, SSO, social-login, and security extensions can add or replace registration behavior. If the frontend does not match Users: Options, identify which extension owns the visible form before changing core permissions or disabling plugins.
