How to Create a Joomla Access Level
A Joomla viewing access level defines which user groups may view items assigned to that level. Create a custom access level when content, menu items, modules, categories, or other supported objects should be visible to a specific set of groups.
Open Viewing Access Levels
- Sign in to Joomla Administrator.
- Select Users → Access Levels.
- Select New.
Joomla's current Help5.x describes the edit screen as the place to create or edit viewing access levels.
Enter the level title
Enter a descriptive Level Title. Use a name that communicates the audience, such as a customer tier or internal role, rather than a name tied to one article that may later be reused elsewhere.
Choose User Groups With Viewing Access
In User Groups With Viewing Access, select the groups that should be able to see items assigned to this level. Joomla user groups are hierarchical. Current Joomla help notes that child groups inherit access from their parent, so you generally do not need to select every child when its parent already has the level.
Save and confirm the level
Select Save or Save & Close. Return to Users → Access Levels and confirm the new level lists the intended groups.
Assign the level to content or interface items
The new level has no practical effect until supported items use it. Set the item's Access field to the new viewing access level on the articles, categories, menu items, modules, contacts, or other components where the visibility rule is required.
Test visibility with representative users
Test with a user who belongs to an included group and another user who does not. Verify both direct content access and the surrounding navigation/module visibility relevant to the site. Remember that a viewing access level controls visibility; it does not grant edit, create, delete, or Administrator permissions.
Be careful when changing or deleting access levels
Changing the groups assigned to a level can affect every item using that level. Joomla's Access Levels manager also prevents deletion of a level that is currently assigned and reports where it is in use. Review impact before changing a widely used level.
