How to Create a Joomla User

Joomla administrators can create user accounts directly from the Users manager. Create a separate account for each person, use a unique login name and email address, and assign only the user groups the person actually needs.

Open the New User screen

  1. Sign in to Joomla Administrator with an account allowed to create users.
  2. Select Users → Manage.
  3. Select New in the toolbar. Joomla also exposes shortcuts from the Users dashboard.

Current Joomla help describes the same User Edit screen as the interface for both creating a new user and editing an existing one.

Enter the required account details

Enter the person's Name, Login Name, and Email; Joomla's current help identifies those as required. Set the password/account fields presented by the form according to your site's policy. Use an address controlled by the user, particularly if password reset or account notifications will depend on it.

Choose the correct user groups

Open the user-group assignment area and select only the groups needed for the person's role. Group membership controls permissions and can also affect which content the user can view through viewing access levels. Do not make someone a Super User simply to solve one missing permission. If the role needs custom access, design the appropriate group/ACL rules instead.

Review optional preferences

Depending on enabled features and permissions, the form can include preferences such as language, editor, time zone, accessibility, custom fields, multi-factor authentication information, and API-related areas. Joomla's help notes that when language, editor, help site, or time zone is not set for the user, the applicable site defaults are used.

Save and verify the account

Select Save & Close when finished, or Save & New if you deliberately need another account. Return to Users → Manage, search for the new login name or email, and confirm the account appears with the intended enabled/activated state and group assignment.

Test the intended access

For an administrative or custom-role account, test with that account rather than with your Super User session. Confirm it can sign in only where intended and can perform the required actions without gaining unrelated privileges. If access is wrong, correct the group or ACL configuration instead of sharing a more privileged account.

Administrator-created users versus registration

Creating a user in Administrator is separate from enabling public self-registration. Joomla's Users Options controls whether visitors can register from the frontend and which group new registrations receive by default. You do not need to enable public registration merely to create an account manually.
