How to Create a Joomla User Group
Joomla user groups are the foundation for assigning permissions and connecting users to viewing access levels. Create a custom group when a role needs a permission or visibility combination that the site's existing groups do not represent cleanly.
Open the User Groups screen
- Sign in to Joomla Administrator.
- Select Users → Groups.
- Select New.
Current Joomla Help5.x documents this route and recommends creating new groups for special purposes rather than editing Joomla's default groups.
Name the group and choose its parent
Enter a clear Group Title that describes the role. Then choose the Group Parent carefully. Joomla user groups form a hierarchy, and child groups inherit permissions and access-level relationships from their parents. Choosing a convenient but overly privileged parent can therefore grant more than you intended.
Save the new group
Select Save to remain on the screen or Save & Close when finished. Reopen Users → Groups and confirm the group appears under the intended parent in the hierarchy.
Configure action permissions separately
Creating a group does not by itself define every action the group can perform. Configure the relevant permissions at Global Configuration, component, category, or item level as required. Joomla evaluates permissions through the ACL hierarchy, so inherited rules matter. A Denied permission higher in the applicable hierarchy cannot simply be overcome by adding an Allowed rule lower down.
Add the group to viewing access levels when needed
If members of the group must see content assigned to a particular viewing access level, open Users → Access Levels and add the group to the appropriate level. Action permissions and viewing access are related through groups, but they answer different questions: what a user may do versus what the user may see.
Assign a test user and verify the role
Add a representative test user to the new group and test the frontend and Administrator capabilities the role should have. Verify both positive and negative cases: the user should be able to perform required actions and should remain unable to perform unrelated privileged actions. Do not test a restricted role with a Super User account.
