How to Create a Joomla User Who Can Edit Articles but Not Administer the Site
Joomla can separate article-editing permissions from Administrator access. The safest design is a dedicated user group that receives only the article actions the role needs while leaving Administrator Login and unrelated administration permissions unavailable.
Create a dedicated editor group
- Select Users → Groups.
- Select New.
- Give the group a clear name such as Frontend Article Editors.
- Choose a parent that does not already grant Administrator access or broader actions than you want. For a tightly controlled custom role, evaluate the parent permissions before saving.
- Save the group.
Grant only the article actions required
Open the Articles component options and its Permissions tab. Select the new group. Joomla's current Articles Options help exposes actions including Create, Delete, Edit, Edit State, Edit Own, Manage Workflows, and Execute Transition.
For a role that edits existing articles without administering the site, grant only the necessary content actions. For example, use Edit when the user must edit articles regardless of author, or Edit Own when the user should edit only content they own. Add Create or Edit State only if the workflow genuinely requires those capabilities.
Do not grant Administrator Login
In System → Global Configuration → Permissions, inspect the new group's effective global permissions. Do not grant Administrator Login. Also avoid broad global permissions such as Super User, Configure Options, or site-wide Edit unless the role requires them. A component-level Articles permission is usually safer than a global content permission.
Make the editing interface available
Action permission alone does not create a frontend workflow. Ensure the user can log in on the frontend and can reach the site's intended article-editing interface. Depending on the site design, that may involve an appropriate frontend menu item, article edit controls, category/content visibility, and any workflow transitions required by the publishing process.
Assign the user to the group
- Select Users → Manage and create or edit the user.
- Open Assigned User Groups.
- Select the custom editor group.
- Remove any unintended privileged groups, but retain other memberships the user legitimately needs for viewing access.
- Save the account.
Test both sides of the restriction
Sign in as the test user. Confirm the user can edit exactly the articles intended by the role. Then try the Administrator login: it should remain unavailable because the group was not granted Administrator Login. Also verify the user cannot publish, delete, configure Articles, or edit unrelated content unless those actions were explicitly granted.
If editing does not work
Check the group's Calculated Setting for the relevant Articles action and inspect parent/global/category rules for an explicit Denied. Separately check viewing access and the frontend route used to reach the article. Joomla ACL determines authorization, while the template/component interface determines whether an edit control is presented.
