How to Enable or Disable Joomla User Registration
Joomla can allow visitors to create their own accounts or require administrators to create every account. The core switch is Allow User Registration in the Users component options. Turn it on only when the site actually needs public self-registration, then verify the registration path and activation policy from the frontend.
Open the Users options
- Sign in to Joomla Administrator.
- Open Users → Manage.
- Select Options in the toolbar.
- Locate Allow User Registration.
Current Joomla 5/6 help documents this setting in Users: Options. When it is enabled, Joomla's Login module can show a Create an Account link; when it is disabled, that self-registration link is not shown.
Enable self-registration
Set Allow User Registration to Yes, then review New User Registration Group and New User Account Activation before saving. Do not enable registration and leave the surrounding policy unreviewed: those settings determine the initial group and whether the new account is immediately active, activated by the user, or requires administrator activation.
Disable self-registration
Set Allow User Registration to No and save. This disables Joomla's normal frontend self-registration path. Administrators can still create users through Joomla Administrator if their permissions allow it. Review custom registration extensions separately because they can implement their own account-creation workflows.
Verify the frontend
Open the site in a private browser session. If registration is enabled, verify that the intended registration route is reachable from the Login module or a Users registration menu item. If registration is disabled, confirm that the normal core registration invitation is absent. A template override or custom extension can alter what is displayed, so test the actual site rather than relying only on the saved option.
Security checks before enabling registration
- Confirm the New User Registration Group grants no more access than intended.
- Choose an activation method appropriate for the site's risk and workflow.
- Configure CAPTCHA if the site uses it for registration.
- Test registration email delivery when activation depends on email.
- Review third-party user, membership, social-login, and anti-spam extensions for separate registration controls.
