How to Fix Joomla Password Reset Emails Not Arriving
Joomla's password-reset flow depends on the account email address and the site's mail delivery. When the reset form appears to work but no message arrives, check the recipient address, Joomla mail configuration, reset limits, spam/delivery filtering, and mail logs in a controlled order.
Confirm the account email address
From an authorized Administrator account, open Users → Manage and inspect the affected user. Confirm the email address is current and spelled correctly. Joomla's password-reset form sends recovery information to the email associated with the account, so a working mail server cannot deliver to the intended person if the account address is wrong.
Test Joomla mail independently
Open System → Global Configuration → Server, scroll to Mail Settings, and use Send Test Mail. On Joomla 5.3 and later, official Joomla documentation states that this test is sent to the currently logged-in administrator's email address while retaining the configured From Email as sender. The Joomla 6.1.3 baseline therefore follows this newer behavior.
Check the configured mailer
If the test fails, correct Joomla's Mail Settings before troubleshooting the password-reset component. Verify the selected mailer and, for SMTP, the server hostname, port, encryption/security mode, username, password, and provider requirements against the actual mail provider. Do not guess provider-specific values.
Check reset limits
Open Users → Manage → Options and review Password Options. Current Joomla Help5.x includes Maximum Reset Count and Reset Time. A user who repeatedly requests resets can hit those configured limits. Do not set unlimited resets merely to hide an abuse or delivery problem.
Check spam filtering and delivery after Joomla accepts the send
A successful Joomla send does not guarantee inbox delivery. Check spam/junk folders and, when available, your SMTP provider or hosting mail logs for rejection, deferral, authentication, sender-policy, or reputation errors. If mail leaves Joomla successfully but the recipient server rejects it, fix the mail-domain/provider issue rather than changing Joomla user permissions.
Use Joomla mail logging for deeper SMTP diagnosis
Official Joomla documentation for debugging SMTP mail in Joomla 5 describes enabling controlled debug/logging, adding the mail log category, reproducing the send, and inspecting the resulting log. If you use that diagnostic path, restrict debug visibility appropriately and turn debugging and extra logging back off after the test.
Retest the actual password-reset flow
After mail delivery works, request one new password reset and use the newest recovery message. If a custom template, security extension, external identity provider, or mail plugin changes the reset process, verify that component separately; Joomla's core mail test cannot prove every third-party reset workflow.
