How to Restrict Joomla Content to Registered Users

To make Joomla content available only to signed-in users, assign the content to an appropriate Viewing Access Level such as the site's Registered level, and make sure the navigation and any related modules use compatible access. Viewing access is separate from editing permissions.

Verify what Registered means on your site

Open Users → Access Levels and inspect the Registered level before relying on its name. Access levels contain user groups, and group hierarchy contributes to a user's authorized viewing levels. On a customized site, verify the actual group membership rather than assuming the default configuration is unchanged.

Set the content's Access level

Open the article or other supported content item and set its Access field to the intended registered-user level. Save the item. Joomla's access model uses the item's Access value to determine whether the current user's authorized viewing levels include that level.

Review category access

If an entire section should be private, consider setting appropriate access on the category as part of a consistent design instead of maintaining hundreds of unrelated item exceptions. Test the actual frontend behavior because component layouts and extensions can have their own filtering logic.

Restrict navigation and modules consistently

Set relevant menu items and modules to a compatible access level when they should not be shown to guests. This improves the user experience, but the underlying content's own access remains important: hiding a menu item or module alone is not a security boundary.

Provide a login route

If guests need a way to authenticate, make sure the site provides an accessible login route. Joomla has a Login Form menu-item type. Do not restrict the only login entry point to the same authenticated-only level that guests need to reach.

Test anonymous and authenticated access

  1. Open a private browser session while logged out and try the normal navigation and a direct content URL.
  2. Sign in as a representative registered user and repeat the test.
  3. Verify that the content appears only after authentication.
  4. Test any custom user group that should or should not inherit registered viewing access.

Viewing access does not grant editing

Receiving a Viewing Access Level only determines whether the user may view items assigned to it. Create, Edit, Edit Own, Edit State, Delete, and administrative actions are governed by Joomla action permissions. Do not grant editing permissions merely to solve a viewing problem.
