Cancel a Running QCBM Backup Safely

QC Backup Manager can cancel a persistent backup without treating a button click as an abrupt process kill. A cancellation request changes the job to a cancelling state and lets QCBM finish at a safe checkpoint before it removes incomplete Backup Set material.

Use Cancel when you no longer want the current Backup Set. If you only need to stop work temporarily, use Pause or Postpone instead so the same saved job can continue later.

Cancel the Active Backup

  1. Open Components > QC Backup Manager > Backups.
  2. Locate the active backup progress panel.
  3. Click Cancel.
  4. Allow QCBM to reach the next safe checkpoint. The interface may report Cancelling backup at the next safe checkpoint… while an active worker finishes its current bounded operation.
  5. Confirm the job ends as cancelled rather than starting another backup immediately.

Why Cancellation May Not Be Instant

QCBM uses persistent jobs and bounded workers so large backup operations can survive browser interruptions. A worker may be writing an archive, recording a checkpoint, or completing another bounded step when you click Cancel.

Instead of interrupting that work in an unsafe state, QCBM records the cancellation request. If it can obtain the per-job worker lock immediately, it finalizes cancellation at once. Otherwise, the Backup Continuation task sees the cancelling job and completes cancellation when the current worker reaches a safe checkpoint.

What QCBM Removes for an Incomplete Backup

When the Backup Set has not yet reached completed status, final cancellation is destructive to that unfinished recovery point. QCBM:

  • releases the persistent backup operation lock;
  • removes the incomplete Backup Set working folder when it is present;
  • removes recorded backup-part rows;
  • marks the Backup Set status as cancelled;
  • sets verification to not verified;
  • clears recorded part count and total size;
  • records Cancelled by administrator as the failure/cancellation context;
  • updates the permanent backup-run ledger and writes log/audit evidence.

A cancelled incomplete Backup Set is not a recovery point. Create a new backup later if you still need protection for the site.

Completed Backup Sets Are Protected

Cancellation has an important safety boundary: it does not delete or downgrade a Backup Set that already reached completed status. This can matter when the local backup is complete but optional follow-up processing, such as automatic export, is still pending.

In that situation QCBM ends the remaining processing and reports that the backup is complete. The completed local recovery material is preserved instead of being removed as though the backup were unfinished.

Cancel Compared with Pause and Postpone

  • Pause preserves the job until an administrator resumes it.
  • Postpone preserves the job and stores a future automatic resume time.
  • Cancel ends the job and removes incomplete Backup Set material when the backup has not already completed.

Choose based on what you want to happen to the same job, not simply on whether you want current CPU or disk activity to stop.

Verify the Result

After cancellation finishes, refresh the Backups view and review Backup History. An incomplete cancelled Backup Set should no longer present itself as a complete, verified recovery point. If the backup had already completed before cancellation, confirm the completed Backup Set and Recovery Package remain available.

If the job remains in cancelling for an unusual amount of time, check the QC Backup Manager Backup Continuation Scheduled Task and look for another active QCBM operation or a worker that has not yet reached its safe checkpoint.

Avoid Starting a Duplicate During Cancellation

Do not start a replacement backup while the original job is still cancelling. QCBM coordinates backup creation with operation locks, and overlapping attempts can make troubleshooting harder even when the lock correctly prevents unsafe work. Wait until cancellation reaches its final state, then start a fresh Backup Set if needed.
